Soon after classes began earlier this fall, a steel I-beam at a Yale University construction site fell, hitting and injuring four people, three of them seriously.
A man pinned under the beam suffered severe leg injuries and possible internal injuries, a fire department spokesperson told the Middletown Press.
Two other workers appeared to have been knocked from a mechanical lift by the beam as it fell to the ground.
Previous Injury Incident
The beam fell 30 feet at a site where a power plant is under construction. It was the second mishap in just over a month at the site. In the previous incident, a cherry-picker tipped over, injuring a worker.
The federal government’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) says 75 percent of construction site fatalities involve heavy equipment such as cranes, cherry-pickers, trucks, bulldozers and the like.
OSHA is investigating the Yale construction site and the incidents.
Dangerous Work
Every year, statistics show that construction is among the most dangerous professions in Philadelphia and across the nation. In construction, there are numerous hazards employers and workers must be aware of:
- Falls: more construction workers are killed in falls every year than any other type of construction site accident. More than 300 construction workers per year are killed in falls from buildings and equipment; too often due to poor equipment, an employer ignoring safety standards, inadequate training and inexperience.
- Electrical: contact with power lines, lack of ground-fault protection, improper use of equipment, faulty equipment and improper use of extension cords all contribute to high numbers of electricity-related injuries and deaths on construction sites.
- Struck by: these incidents involve workers being struck by falling beams, as in the Yale incident, other falling objects, or struck by heavy equipment.
- Cave-ins: these trenching mishaps can often be tragic when trenches or excavations collapse.
